Message: THANKS! I had a wonderful time on Safari in Kenya, it may
have been only three days but three fantastic days nonetheless! The
Africa Travel Safari company driver was great. there were just three of
us in total plus the driver and a masaai guide. A fun time had by all
and saw four out of the big five on just one day! Once again, thank you,
it was certainly worth it!

Information and Tour Service Voucher
Hello
Recently returned home from our extended trip of India/Sri Lanka, which
included the Footprint Tiger Trail in the first half of February.
Have to say that we had a fantastic experience, esp in Bandhavgarh, the
lodge was very good, welcoming and attentive staff without being over the
top, excellent food, bonfire & biscuits after the afternoon game drives was
particularly nice, and morning brunches were the best we had in India. We
were very lucky to have superb viewings of the dominant male, B2, courting
one of his ladies on the roadway within 15metres of 'our' gypsy, incl scent
marking and sparring, together with several sightings of other tigers. Our
driver, Dino, was very knowledgeable as were the local park guides.
We were not so lucky in Kanha, weather had turned cold and wet, and although
we had two tiger sightings, they were very much an anti climax after
Bandhavgarh. Pradeep, our guide in Kanha, was very much into birds which
suited us as we were able to identify a good number of the colourful birds
with his help.
The only thing that we were not too happy about at the time was at the start
of our trip when we were taken to the railway station in Delhi, our first
experience of Indian trains. The driver would not leave the car to help us
find the correct platform for our train, but luckily we found a very helpful
porter who not only took us to the platform, but found the correct carriage
and seats for us as well, well worth his tip.
All in all a very enjoyable trip that we would have no hesitation in
recommending to others.
Best Regards
Malcolm & Linda Andrews, Lichfield, Staffs.

Experience III
Happy New Year Jane! We had a
great time in Indonesia, on the whole, and the time with the Orang-utans in
particular was out of this world. The Komodo Dragons were awesome, and the fact
that you could fail to see such a large lizard (we almost stepped on one!)
amazing. Our wildlife guides were knowledgeable and kept us safe. A few things
did go wrong. This is to be expected in such places, but I thought the following
comments might help future travellers:
-
The Komodo National Park
requires a US$15 dollar Conservation Fund contribution, covering up to 3 days in
the park. For longer, it was more. It would be best for travellers to be advised
of this in advance. We were told as we were getting off the boat for the island.
Most would have this amount of dollars on them (we had taken your advice and
carried quite a lot more than that).
-
We went to the famous Pink
Beach for snorkelling, but there was one mask and no flippers on our boat. We
shared and made the best of it, but in such a wonderful spot for coral and
tropical fish it was somewhat frustrating.
-
We did not visit the Kampung
Komodo fishing village, returning to Labuan Bajo about 3.30pm as we were told
the boat was going out on another charter. Tourism is very down in Indonesia,
which must affect those involved, but would be best encouraged by making sure
that those who go return with good reports.
-
The Flores section of the
itinerary seemed to us unrealistic, given the bad roads winding up and down
mountains. For example, we were to arrive at Maumere at 15:35 (there is only one
flight a day) and had a 4 hour drive to our overnight stop. Any sightseeing
would not therefore be possible. We discussed the itinerary with our local guide
after a couple of days as I wanted to visit traditional villages, and we then
went to 2. But basically it seemed to be time constraints that were the problem.
We filled out a detailed
report before we left, and hopefully they will address some of the issues for
the next clients.
On a positive note, the Kamandalu Resort was wonderful, very restful and with
helpful staff who arranged for us to see classical dance and the packing of our
many souvenirs! Ubud is a fascinating part of Bali for those liking a quiet life
(unlike Kuta Beach).
Best wishes
Eleanor

Subject: Trek and Tiger safari
Dear George, Jane, Sandra
Many many thanks for a
superbly organised (despite the Indian railway, and pothole ravaged roads) trip
to the sub-continent. We all had a fantastic time. Our guide on the trek Sunder
Kapoor led us with enthusiasm and humour and the porters were a joy to be with.
I think on reflection the countryside was prettier than I remember in
Nepal(Annapurna Sanctuary), some of the alpine meadows reminded me very much of
Austria/Switzerland and the wild life was in abundance.
The Tiger safari was
everything I wanted and getting up close to the animals was an experience I
shall never forget. We saw enough of the tigers in what seemed to be a very
sympathetically managed park. The other bird/mammal/reptile life in the park was
also superb, but I am afraid nothing matched the view or the anticipation of the
view of what can only be described as the King of the cats! Sanjiv was a
delightful host and obviously very passionate about his work.
Again many thanks and I hope
Jane is coping well.

Hello Jane,
Sorry not to have been in touch before to thank you for arranging our excellent
trip to Sumatra. Everything went reasonably smoothly (at least as smoothly as
it can in Indonesia) and our 3 local guides coped very well with any problems as
they arose. The main difficulty was getting to Siberut Island as the ferries
run infrequently and are cancelled if the sea is at all rough. Our guide in W
Sumatra had to change the order of our itinerary because of the ferry problems
which meant that we had less time on the island than expected. Siberut
was fascinating and living with the local people a real experience but trekking
conditions were difficult due to the mud (calf deep in places) and the fact that
we had to balance on wet slippery tree trunks to cross the many rivers and
streams. Because of this, we usually ended up sliding down the muddy banks and
wading through the rivers before hauling ourselves up the bank on the other
side! One thing to note for anybody planning to visit the island is that no
porters and no sleeping mats are provided. Visitors definitely need something
to cushion the hard wooden floors in the houses and as trekkers are permanently
wet and muddy there is little point in changing clothes daily. We ended up
wearing the same outer clothes for most of the time (hope we didn't smell too
bad!) and keeping something dry to wear at night.
Best wishes,
Rosemary

Dear Jane;
Re: Birds of Peninsular
Malaysia and Birds of Borneo
Now that we have returned
from our two birding tours, I thought I might relate to you some comments on
various aspects of our adventure. On arrival at Kuala Lumpur International
Airport, we were met by your representative, Mr. Mano Tharmalingam, who not only
delivered us competently from venue to venue, provided expert birding
identification along the drives and advice on where to find birds at each
location. There was some surprise that we were staying at the Corona Inn in KL
rather that the Stanford Hotel, however, we had no complaints about the change.
Our stay at Taman Negara provided everything expected (we knew to expect
leeches, but the heat and humidity was more trying than we expected coming from
the droughts of Australia). We were allocated a chalet with adjoining
interconnected suites for Mrs. McPherson and ourselves, which was a little
“extra” that was appreciated. The included breakfasts and dinners were varied
and plentiful. While the increased altitude at Fraser’s Hill provided outdoor
conditions, which were more pleasant than in the lowlands of Taman Negara, the
Shahzan Hotel, however, was a little “tired and worn”, and the breakfasts
provided were little more than awful. Our allocated small chalets in the Kuala
Salangor Nature Park were very simple, but as expected, except that patrons
should be notified that towels are not provided. Fortunately, the receptionist
took pity on us and procured some towels for us.
The Birds of Borneo Tour
was better value for the money compared to the Birds of Peninsular Malaysia tour
option, in my opinion. The continuous presence of a birding guide, Mr. Hamit
Suban in our case, was a major plus and the quality of each accommodation venue
was superior. Our Nepenthes Lodge accommodation at Kinabalu National Park was
especially nice and our stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge was exceptional. The
boat-based birding at Sukau was very memorable.
Overall, we were well
pleased with our record of the observation of 210 bird species and enjoyed our
two tours in Malaysia. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf.
Sincerely yours;
David T. Bell

Dear Jane Augustin
Just reporting on the trip to Nepal
for myself and Elizabeth from 1 to 21 April.
Field service, office service and
tour evaluation were all excellent. We very much liked the Mountain Club people,
and got on especially well with Ramesh and BN Dakhal.
Elizabeth found her hike from
Namobuddha to Balthali exacting, but enjoyed her part of the trip. I greatly
enjoyed my part of the trip (a trek in the Annapurna Ranges), and much
appreciated the services of Ramesh, Passan the chef and the porters.
The following are not criticisms,
only suggestions. My part of the trip was badly affected by weather (only one
completely fine day out of 11 days trekking; on the other ten days we had only
sunny periods). We had to change much of the route because of snow ahead. I
noticed luxuriant moss on trees everywhere, and it might we worth warning people
who plan to trek in the Annapurna region of the risk of wet weather. But high
rainfall brings its compensations, and the rhododendrons and scenery were
wonderful.
The whole trip was well worth while.
Thanks very much for your help.

If we provided you with copies

Hi all, I'm sending this message from Kampala, capital of
Uganda. Having a fantastic time, weather is hot & company is good. I am in a
group of 16 - only 2 Brits, 2 Irish, 1 American and the rest are Aussies!! We
are travelling in a huge overland truck (which can be very bumpy at times) and
staying at campsites. I am eating like a horse & sleeping like a log which is
great. The highlight so far was seeing the mountain gorillas on Friday in the
jungle of Congo after trekking for 2.5hrs through dense forest, it was the most
amazing experience, we came within 6ft of the silverback and there was a tiny
baby of about 1yr in the group too. Yesterday we stayed at a campsite next to
the beautiful Lake Bunonyi and took a boat trip to the other side to see a pygmy
tribe who danced and sang for us. Today we crossed the equator and now staying
in Kampala for 2 nights before going to Jinja for 3 nights to sample white river
rafting/quad-biking etc! before moving on to Kenya on Saturday.
Hope everything is well with you.
Take care until we next speak

I have just returned from your Tiger and Forts Tour of India. I write to
compliment you and Footprints. The organisation was flawless. At every stage we
were met on time and the program ran seamlessly. With the exception of a single
guide (who I would rate as average), all others were excellent. Without
exception we were treated like honoured guests. Your in-bound ground operators
were consistently helpful and even phoned on four or five occasions to check in.
Wonderful. My complements. We saw fourteen tigers!

much for organising everything for us. We had a wonderful time, and managed to
raise about 12 thousand for charity which is brilliant!
Will certainly use Footprints again if I ever get enough energy to do any more

Jane,
Terribly sorry, appeared to have mislaid the Survey report,
but hope this answer can act in its place.
The organisation was very good indeed. At each spot there was
someone to greet us, without us having to seek them out at all. Shalini was very
friendly and organised the re-confirming of our return flights. Sanjeev was very
knowledgeable and a good companion on the game drives. He also exceeded what I
would have considered a manager's responsibility - on the last day, Peter wasn't
well. Unknown to us Sanjeev phoned ahead to the Krishna Hotel in Napier to
inform them, and when we reached there they enquired whether Peter would require
a doctor. A personal touch, much appreciated.
We had one breakdown between the parks, but this was hardly surprising given the
state of the roads, and the driver was very concerned and really worked hard at
getting us to a town with phones, shelter and food. A replacement vehicle was
with us within 2 hours, and given our previous experiences in India (albeit over
a decade ago now) we were impressed.
At both game parks the food was excellent and plenty of it. The staff at
Bandhavgarh were particularly friendly. The nature films at Kanha a good idea
for the evenings. The hotels in Dehli were well chosen, one near to the airport
for our late arrival on day one; and one very centrally to enjoy a day in Dehli
on our return.
In summary, I would recommend this Trip and your company to
anyone.
Thank you
Kris & Peter Blood.

Dear Jane,
Having just returned from Nepal, I would just like to let you know I had another
fantastic time with Footprint. The birding portion of this trip was truly
amazing with some 340 species recorded during the 24 days trip. Also your guides
and organization was outstanding and despite the difficult political situation
in Nepal with it's many strikes we only suffered a few minor delays. The trek to
Gokyo and Klapatthar was truly a wonderful experience. The views of Everest
outstanding and another 41 species of birds.
Thanks again and I will be back.

Good morning Jane
Just a few lines to let you know I had a great time in Rwanda
and finally got back to the UK on Thursday 19th Feb after a few days at Watamu,
Kenya.
The scenery in Rwanda is stunning and the people very friendly and easy going.
Pascal our guide was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Nyungwe was
very enjoyable and I saw some excellent birds including Rwenzori Turaco and
Rwnzori Batis. My favorite place had to be Kibuye with the guest house located
on the shores of Lake Kivu and I could easily have stayed an extra few nights.
The boat trip to Gisenyi was memorable and took place on a very calm lake! The
day trip to Goma was well worth it and quite an experience.
The stay at Kinigi was excellent and after a gorilla trek to
the Amahuru Group on Mount Visoke it was for me birding for the remainder of the
stay. The birding is not something they are used to at PNV but I met some senior
parks officials and told them to encourage "Gorillas plus birds" and they were
very interested. In other words try and encourage people to come for more than
just two nights. My guide was Fidel with whom I went on three morning
excursions, once near Mount Sabinyo and twice on Mount Visoke. He is very good
and knows all the latin names of birds. With the excellent Stephenson and
Fanshawe fieldguide this can be translated into English very quickly and we saw
many excellent birds including a number of the Albertine Rift Valley endemics. I
recommended to the head of ORPTN at Kinigi that Fidel needed a decent field
guide soonest and he took note. If you would like a list of birds seen I can
supply same.
Many thanks for organizing a great trip.

was a little apprehensive about taking the train journey, but there was no need

tigers (16 sightings (6 different tigers) in Bandhavgarh and 5 different
sightings tigers in Kanha). On top of that 76 species of birds! The lodges you
use are of a very high standard and very friendly. I was impressed at the high

double the price!!). We had real value for money. I would like to thank you for

I have just returned from gorilla watching in Uganda. It was a superb holiday
and ran smoothly to the end. I was expecting the gorilla tracking to be the
highlight as it was but I was very pleased to find I had nearly as much pleasure
from the other experiences such as river wildlife viewing at Murchison Falls and
Queen Elizabeth Park and seeing chimpanzees in the wild at Kabale Forest
Reserve.
Our guide was excellent, knowledgeable and efficient. On talking to other
travellers we seemed to have extremely good value for money (half the cost of
some) with a lot more luxury (4 nights out of 9 in
5 star hotels etc) than others only a little cheaper.
Thank you for arranging a break I very much needed.

Dear Jane / Georg
Just to let you know we had a fabulous time on Kilimanjaro.
Zara were excellent - even managing to fit a one day safari into our final few
hours in Tanzania. Our guide (Lamek) managed to get us huts to ourselves every
night bar one, and we were both amazed at how good and plentiful the food was
considering where we were.
Juliet made it to the top. Unfortunately I had quite severe
ataxia at Hans Meyer cave and had to go down - only 3 hours from the top!
The main point of this message - we were so taken with the
whole trip that we want to do something very similar next year. We very much
liked Africa, but would consider alternatives. We are considering Kili by a
tougher route in 2 years' time, but would like somewhere new in October 2003.
We are looking at Mt Kenya, but of course you might have other
ideas. What do think would be a good next step after Kilimanjaro?
I look forward to hearing your ideas.

Venezuela and the beach at Morrocoy
Jane,
Just to let you know that we all arrived safely back from Venezuela having had a
good few days at Morrocoy. The Posada was very good, well situated with a
wonderful view. We were taken to islands in the park - we had our own boatmen,
lunch and beer provided. Once they knew we were looking a the birds we were
taken to "bird island" where a thousand or more Frigate Birds were nesting with
a smaller number of Egrets and assorted Herons and on the second night we were
taken to a very small island - at dusk - to see the roosting Scarlet Ibis. they
looked for all the world like large scarlet flowers on the dark mangrove trees.
A good holiday - thanks for arranging it.

Dear Jane,
We have been home for about 36 hours now, so there is no way
we have completed our ruminations about our five weeks in Kenya. Whatever our
final analysis is the following is certain. The experience was astonishing.
The birds were spectacular and abundant. The reptiles, amphibians, and mammals
were an amazing bonus, and could easily have justified the trip on their own.
The country was always interesting and often awesome. The three men who squired
us through their country were warm, generous, hard-working, generally beautiful
guys. The cook, Paul, was fantastic. The driver, Martin, was a sweetheart. Rop,
the guide, got me hundreds (>500) of birds, and excellent looks at many of them.
I liked these people. I got choked up when they drove off and left us in Watamu.
We thoroughly enjoyed the day we spent with Georg, and hope his climbs went
well. He definitely was in the right frame of mind. It was a pleasure to meet
him. We gave him instructions to tell you how much we appreciated your help

Ken & I just wanted to say what a fantastic time we had on the trekking holiday
in Torres del Paine - thank you very much. Everything was so well organised, the

Hi there...

5 Day trek - luxury camp / Torres del Paine Absolutely

YOU DON'T NEED A SLEEPING BAG - these are provided plus blankets and more.

Dear Jane,
I would like to extend my thanks to you and your operators in
Ecuador for a wonderful holiday. Despite some minor hiccups (some delayed
luggage and a missed flight in Lago Agrio) your ground operators went to extra
trouble to ensure that we got where we needed to be, checking us in where
possible, with the appropriate luggage and meeting us on our return. In Lago
Agrio transport had to be organised at the last minute to get us back to Quito
(that was an adventure...) but Pablo rose to the occasion and sorted everything
out for us.
Our hotel in Quito was in prime position and we walked for
miles around town.
We found the facilities excellent at our camp in the Amazon
rainforest and when looking at a couple of other campsites we passed through on
our travels, we definitely felt we got the best deal. The camp was basic but
spotlessly clean and the food was beautifully prepared with some local things we
had definitely not tasted before! Sleeping virtually out in the open listening
to the jungle sounds is definitely an experience not to be missed.
The Galapagos tour was equally a great experience, although
you might want to note for future guests you put on the Angelito that they
should request a deck or front cabin as the two rear cabins are extremely
cramped and very noisy when the boat travels at night. The deck cabins are the
best. We were able to move from the back after a few days when some others left
and it was much better. The guiding and facilities on board however were
fantastic. And then, of course, there is the wildlife......
We were struck by how the guides always took their time and we
were never rushed, always having time to take in our surroundings and spot the
wildlife. We noted some of the other larger groups appeared to be herded through
the islands as fast as possible, sometimes they came and went while we were
still wandering around! Photo opportunities were everywhere and we have hundreds
of wonderful photos from our trip.
We are now so hooked that we are thinking of taking your trip
to Kenya next year to visit the Mountain Gorilla's and do a safari. In a few
years time we would like to go to Ecuador again to sample some of the treats we
didn't have time for including some of the more remote islands.
Perhaps you could forward us the dates of the Mountain Gorilla
trips for next year when you know them.
Thank you again for a fantastic holiday. We will be back.
Kind regards,

Please accept our congratulations on organising a fantastic
Zimbabwe tour. Peter and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was the best
holiday we've had (which makes it even harder to come back to work). Our guide
Rick was absolutely fantastic. He was in complete control of the organisation
and the smooth running of the tour. His knowledge of the country, wildlife and
local customs was exceptional. The food was good and of a high standard, but it
was his attitude and enthusiasm that rubbed off on all of us. He was constantly
interested in our welfare. The local guides were very knowledgeable and always
keen to help. It was very nice to see Joe and chat about the good 'ol days (as
I've travelled on the Botswana trip in the past). It's good to see some
continuity in the company.

He also assessed our capabilities and adjusted the day's walking to ensure that

I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed my recent trip to Nepal. The
arrangements all worked extremely well with no hitches. Your agents in Kathmandu
were very efficient and courteous, making all the necessary arrangements,
thereby relieving me of my concerns.
Kind regards
Adrian Tavill
Dear George and Jane,
A brilliant trip, we were looked after splendidly throughout. Sadly no tiger in
spite of taking extra game runs. However, in Corbett N.P. we were lucky to see a
leopard crouching behind a bush ready to pounce on a sambar deer near - by -
just a few feet from the jeep. a jungle cat, an enormous mongoose and lots and
lots of wonderful birds including close views of the only two Siberian Cranes to
winter at Bharatpur this year and a displaying pair of Sarus Cranes on video.
Many thanks for organizing the trip for us. We both thoroughly enjoyed it.
Please let us know if you can ever guarantee us a tiger!!
Regards,
Jean
