ACROSS BORNEO
TREKKING, RIVER ADVENTURE &
HIDDEN CULTURES
Experience
the ultimate challenge!
Crossing one of the most rugged islands on earth from East to West. Using
roads, rivers and feet we traverse the jungle of Kalimantan (Indonesian
Borneo). You must have a good level of fitness and adventurous spirit and a
strong sense of determination, as conditions and accommodations are
challenging.
We will use
busses, public house boat, chartered motorized canoes to access the jungle
for a rugged days of trekking. We sleep in the simple houses of the villager
with basic facilities and on the house boats. The trekking is tough and
often wet, the only way to appreciate the primary jungle of Kalimantan and
the most traditional Dayak Tribes settlements as well as the wildlife.
KALIMANTAN
Kalimantan
formerly called Borneo, is the third largest island in the world. The
northern area is parts of Malaysia and Brunei, while the larger southern
area comprises Indonesia. Our entire island is blessed with abundant
resources of lumber, gas, oil and coal.
While rich in
resources, East Kalimantan also abounds in splendid natural wonders,
providing unique opportunities for the young and hearty in spirit. The main
attraction is the mighty Mahakam River. With headwaters near the centre of
the island, it meanders thousands of kilometres through one of the largest
tropical rainforest in the world.
Within the shady
green environment of the equatorial rainforest, thousand of species of
plants and animals live in ecological harmony. Here nature mounts her most
complex endeavours, and for million of years the flora and fauna have
coexisted, supplying each other's life-sustaining energy. The main Dayak
tribes, formerly nomadic, are now settled on the banks and tributaries of
the Mahakam River. Long identified as head hunters, this practise has long
ago been eliminated among the almost twenty different tribes calling this
river basin their home.
Remarkable
varieties of wildlife and vegetation coupled with personal interaction with
different Dayak tribes provide for the adventurer a truly thrilling
experience. Civilization has spread into the interior of Kalimantan since
the Mahakam provides the Dayak convenient access to larger cities.
Nevertheless,
examples of animistic mysticism still prevail throughout the area,
frequently blended with Moslem and the more recently introduced Christian
religion. Rituals to provide rain, a bountiful harvest, or the quick
recovery of the sick are practiced in the villages. The sincere enthusiasm
shown towards visitors is strongly tied to the belief of welcoming good
spirits to the village, and is Dayak way holding their society together, as
well as perpetuating their ancient traditions.
West Kalimantan
is dissected by Indonesia’s longest river, Kapuas (1,143 Km), which the main
transport artery for rafts or logs and other heavy cargo to and from the
interior.
