YALI TRIBE TREKKING ADVENTURE

Irian, one of the Last Frontier on Earth, the paradise for the adventure seekers. The undulating jungles from the mountainous to low land, swampy and coastal rain forest, river valleys and glacial peaks were hiding the ancient cultures of Neolithic tribes for thousand years until discovered in the early of the 20th centuries.

The terrain kept apart from each other for centuries by hostile terrain and long traditions of inter-tribal warfare, headhunting and cannibalism, there has evolved an astonishing degree of cultural and linguistic diversity in language, customs and even physical appearance, despite a great similarity in physical appearance.

Our carefully designed packages will bring you to the remote places to explore the most primitive regions on earth.

YALI TRIBE

Another tribe called Yali, live on hills and flat terrain deeper in the Baliem Valley, at Angguruk that can be reach by 30 minutes chartered flight. The temperature of this area is 20 C  - 30 C in the day time and at night 10 C - 15 C. The total population of this area is 30.000 people.

This tribe has similar way of life like Dani but is shorter and "cleaner". The Yali tribesmen wear "koteka", the penis gourd, straight to front instead of straight up like the Dani do.

The Yali practice less sophisticated cultivation techniques than Dani and keep fewer pigs. They provide the Dani with decorative bird feathers as well as tree kangaroo and cuscus pelts and fine rare woods, long disappear from the Baliem Valley itself.

Yali tools have not changed in a thousand of years - stone axe of pointed shards wrapped tightly onto a wooden stick, net carrying bags supported from the forehead, thick bows five or six feet long, and arrowhead carved to a purpose -broad and flat for large game, a triple barb for birds, notched and tapered black for setting tribal disputes.

There are two actually main tribes in the area:  Yali and Yalimo. Compared with the Dani people this tribe is much more primitive and less visited. They are also less influenced by outside world. There are no land transportation and accommodation available here all must be trekked on foot.

The only air transportation to Angguruk or Kosarek is served by missionary small flight that has to be booked early in advance.

In Angguruk, there're just only missionary's house, teacher's house or even local people's hut for accommodation. Food material must be taken along with, as there is no shop available in this region.

Yogosem and Kiroma are the closest Dani village to Yali area. We will be passing through the Dani gardens as well as some small forest where the Dani peoples took their wood for the house and for fire. Stay at the local house in Kiroma. Dani house called honai, round in shape, with a place for fire on the center. We spend 7 – 8 hours walk today.

DAY 04 : KIROMA – MT. SIAM (B,L,D)

The trail is getting more strenuous than before. We leave the houses and the garden of the Dani. No villages to see on the way today. We will be passing through the highland forest dominated by trees and ferns. If we are lucky, we may meet the Yali peoples with their penis gourd and rattan hoop along the waist. In some parts of the trail, we will cross some rivers, walk along the riverside and climb the hilly terrain. Most of the walk is heading uphill. We are at the altitude of about 3,000 today. In the evening, the temperature can be ice cool and the wind blows very hard. We need 6 – 7 hours of walk today.

DAY 05 : MT. SIAM – SWELE HUT / CAMP (B,L,D)

Anther difficult walk, heading to Swele camp / some local call this Swele hut. There is a small hut on our destination where the local hunter usually stay overnight in their hunting. Today we will pass a highland swamp where some water birds usually seen. The walk will be more difficult as we have to deal with muddy and wet trail. There are also soma small rivers we have to cross. The temperature is very cool up there. Stay at the hunter camp site. We spend 7 – 8 hours walk today.

DAY 06 : SWELE – SOLINGGUL (B,L,D)

Today is an easier difficult trail from the mountain down to Yali home. There is a small church

here. Peoples at Solinggul (most of them) still wearing grass skirt and penis gourd. The locals usually come to surround us as the presence of the white is very seldom there. We usually have some cigarettes for the elderly (to show friendship), and some candy for the kids. Stay at the local house in Solinggul. Our struggle for days in the jungle has got it’s prize today.

DAY 07 : SOLINGGUL – WANIYOK - PRONGGOLI (B,L,D)

Solinggul village perches on a small hill, overlooking another Yali village name Waniyok. The view along the way is very spectacular, while the wind blows quite strong. We will be crossing Mt. Elit slope in about 3 – 4 hours climb. Make a rest while enjoy lunch and the scenery.  Proceed to Matik, another 3 hours walk, some muddy and wet trail. Stay overnight at the tent.

DAY 10 : MATIK  - WONGGOL – KALI MULIK – KIROMA (B,L,D)

Another walk along the highland forest, but the walk is much easier, descend from Matik to Wonggol camp and Kali Mulik. The walk will be about 6 hours, still muddy and wet trail. There are also some rivers about 2 – 3 m width we have to cross. Stop for lunch at Kali Mulik  riverside. Wonggol is a meeting point of 2 trails. The one to the lefty will take peoples to Pronggoli and the one on the right  will take peoples to Solinggul. From Kali Mugi, another 2 hours walk will take us to Kiroma. As Kiroma les on the border between Yali and Dani, many peoples here are the cross bred between Yali and Dani. They speak both Yali and Dani language.

What to Bring for trekking trip in Papua

Paper Work:
* Valid passport: your passport must be valid for at least six months after your date of departure from Indonesia

* Four additional passport photos (please keep these handy as we will need these as soon as we arrive in Jayapura)

* Second photo ID (e.g., a driver's license)

* Photocopy of your passport

* Airline ticket and expense money

* All expense money should be exchanged in Jakarta/Denpasar/other major cities upon arrival, as the exchange rate is approximately 25% higher in Jakarta than it is in Jayapura

* In general, credit cards are not accepted in Irian Jaya, so please plan appropriately.

* Travel insurance

Footwear:
In general, our experience tells us that heavy, leather hiking boots are not appropriate for trekking in most parts of Irian Jaya. The reason for this is we spend quite a bit of time walking through water and mud, and the leather gets very saturated. Given the moist climate, the leather will not dry out and could begin to fall apart. We do recommend lightweight trail shoes or even running shoes. The best qualities to look for in choosing shoes to bring to Irian Jaya are as follows:
1. Comfort. Can you walk up to 6 hours in these shoes? (your shoes should be broken in before your trip!)
2. As much synthetic material in the construction as possible
3. Sticky rubber on the bottom sole.
4. Flexible sole (a very thick sole will not allow you to feel where you are placing your feet when on wet logs, etc.)
5. Support for the ankle and the bottom of the foot

Socks:
We recommend synthetic or wool blend socks with a thin, capilene-type liner as a first layer. Cotton socks tend to absorb too much water and hold an interesting 'scent' if used repeatedly while trekking.

Clothing List:
* 2 pair Trail Shoes (one replacement pair, just in case!)
* Tevas (or something similar for bathing in streams, around camp, etc.)
* 4 pair of synthetic blend socks (wool blend works well)
* 2 pair thin liner socks
* 1 pair of shorts (quick-dry or supplex nylon material)
* 2 pair trousers (quick-dry or supplex nylon material)
* 1 bathing suit
* 1 lightweight sweater, sweatshirt or fleece
* 4-6 short sleeved shirts (it is best to avoid cotton)
* 1 long-sleeved shirt (quick-dry or supplex nylon material)
* Underwear
* Sleepwear and SLEEPING BAG

Travel Clothing:
* 1-2 dress, skirt or comfortable light-weight trouser
* 2 shirts or t-shirts
* Socks and underwear

In general, it's a smart idea to either wear or carry one pair of your 'trekking shoes' with you just in case your bags should be lost or delayed. While most things can be replaced, it is very tough to replace a good-fitting pair of shoes for trekking!

Gear:
* Large durable, nylon or waterproof duffle bag

* Small collapsible duffle for storing travel clothing and any additional gear that you may decided not to bring trekking)
* Day pack that can fit water bottle and camera
* Rain cover for day pack

* Sleeping bag (rated to 60 degrees)
* Ziplock bags (we recommend that you pack absolutely everything you bring in ziplock bags. It is also wise to bring a 5-10 extra to separate wet clothing from dry)
* Camera

* Recording device and blank tapes (roughly 4-6 hours worth of blank tape)

* Binoculars

* Sunglasses with hard case

* Flashlight

* Extra batteries (for camera, tape recorder and flashlight)

* Quick dry camping towel

* 1-2 bandannas (can be used to cool you off during the day as well as for a wash cloth)
* Broad brim (collapsible) hat or baseball cap
* Medical & Toiletries Kit:
- Personal Toiletries (including bio-degradable liquid soap)
- Sunscreen (preferably with Deet)
- 2-3 bottles Deet-Such as REI's Jungle Juice (remember to pack each bottle in a ziplock bag, as Deet can dissolve certain materials)
- Second pair of eye glasses (if you need your eye glasses on a daily basis)
- Aspirin, Tylenol, Aleve or something similar
- Personal medications (anything you normally take at home and any precautionary items such as migraine medications, if you are prone to that).
- Cold medicine
- Allergy medicine
- Anti-diarrhea medicine (e.g., Immodium and an antibiotic)
- General Antibiotic
- Eye drops
- Poly or Neosporin
- Assorted BandAids (fabric adheres better than the plastic in humid conditions)
- Ace bandage and safety pins
- Anti-fungal cream for the feet (prescription strength is best)
