Gurney’s Pitta

Arrive
Krabi Airport and transfer to Klong Tom. Overnight at Morakot Resort, a
simple fanned bungalow.

Thailand's
last significant remnant of lowland rainforest, at Khao Nor Chuchi, Krabi,
Southern Thailand, which is the only known site for a globally threatened,
endemic bird species, Gurney's Pitta. The numbers of this brightly-coloured, but
highly secretive, species have dropped dramatically , from an estimated 40 pairs
at the time of its discovery at Khao Nor Chuchi in 1986, to 21 pairs in 1992 and
less than 10 pairs in 1997.
Over 100 bird species can be found in the reserve and
this include Wallace's Hawk-eagle, Moustached and Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo, Buffy
Fish Owl, Brown Wood Owl, Gould's Frogmouth, Cinnamon-rumped Trogon, Banded,
Gurney's, Hooded and Blue-winged Pitta, Banded Broadbill, Rufous-collared
Kingfisher, Malaysian Honeyguide and Large Wren-babbler.

your search for Gurney’s Pitta or have a full day’s canoeing to explore the
mangrove forests and river estuary, with an opportunity to visit some
‘Hongs’ (open-air lagoons accessible only through a cave entrance) and
admire their fascinating ecological system. One will also have the chance to see
water monitor, monkeys, gibbons and also pre-historic paintings on the cave
walls and cliffs. After paddling through mangrove forests the day’s highlight
will be passing beneath the Khanab Nam Mountain, a magnificent canyon covered
with wild flora extending for some 400 metres.

English speaking guide, not a
bird leader (can be supplied if required) however the guide will take you to
places where the birds are commonly found.
