Komodo Dragons

Encounter the world's largest lizards, the Komodo Dragons (Varanus Komodoensis), considered the last of their kind remaining in the world today. Its ancestors roamed the earth up to about half a million years ago. Nowadays the dragons estimated at 5,000 - 7,000 inhabited the islands of Komodo, Rinca and other tiny surrounding islands, and on the westernmost part of Flores Island in Indonesia.

Spend an adventurous nights on the boat.  In the morning or afternoon you can snorkelling or diving around Komodo, some of the best in the world, especially for seeing soft corals. Some of the beaches nearby have beautiful pink sand, tinted by fragments of red coral mixed in with other shell and coral fragments.

KOMODO DRAGON

Known as "ORA" by the local people and tagged ‘Komodo Dragon’ by western, is actually a giant monitor lizard. Growing up to 3 to 4 meters in length, its ancestors roamed the earth up to about half a million years ago. Komodo feed on other animals: goat, deer, water buffalo and even their own dead.

Although Komodo are considered harmless and it is advisable to keep them at the distance, today the ORA is a protected species. They inhabit the Komodo Island and other nearby island of Rinca & Padar.

KOMODO ISLAND

Komodo is a small hilly of 280 square km, located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. The island is famous for its giant lizards, considered the last of their kind remaining in the world today, the Komodo Dragon.  It is surrounded by some the most tempestuous waters in Indonesia that provides a good snorkeling and diving.

Komodo Island is now a nature reserve, home to a number of rare bird species, deer and weld pigs, which are prey to the lizards as well. The only human population on the island is at the fishing village called Kampung Komodo, in a bay on the east coast, who supplements their income breeding goats which are used to feed the lizard.

There is a water hole called Banugulung which attracts Komodo as well as a little ‘grandstand’ overlooks the river bed where the dragons gathered. You might also see dragons on some of the walks and few lazy examples around the tourist camp loking for food.

RINCA ISLAND

Another island inhabit by the Komodo Dragon is Rinca Island. Even there are now feeding places on the island and spotting the monitor is more a matter of luck and your guide knowledge, but there are much other abundant species: several monkey colonies, wild water buffalos, deer, horses, pigs, bush turkeys and eagles.
