Khao Sok Jungle Adventure 4 days

Grade 2

Covering 656 km. Khao Sok National Park is dominated by spectacular forest-covered limestone crags rising up to 1000 meters. This jungle safari offers a unique opportunity to explore virgin rainforest and learn of its flora and fauna from experienced local guides. In dense regions of the forest a few tigers still prowl and the park is also home to leopard, golden cat and clouded leopard, though they are rarely seen. Elephant, gaur, serow, benteng, Malay sun bear, Malay tapir and wild boar roam the forest floor while gibbon, langur and macaque are abundant in the canopy above. In addition, over 180 bird species are to be found in the park including five species of hornbill, the giant Argus pheasant and 13 species of woodpecker.

An unforgettable adventure in Khao Sok National Park for the unique experience of a night in a tree-house in the midst of the southern jungle and in remote raft-houses by sleepy, beautiful Chiaw Lan Lake, so-called Guilin of Thailand, surrounded by spectacular limestone karsts.

Day 1, Khao Sok                (-/L/D)

Transfer from your hotel in Phuket by air-conditioned coach or from Suratthani train station by a private pick-up truck (Songthaew). Check in and after some refreshments it’s up to your tree house. After lunch go tubing down the Klong Sok in inner-tubes (depending on the season), passing dramatic mountain cliffs, with the possibility of observing the wildlife along the way and visiting a viewpoint and small waterfall. Dinner and then overnight in your tree house.

Day 2, Khao Sok - Lake       (B/L/D)

After breakfast transfer by open pick-up truck to Chiaw Lan Lake. Take a boat to the raft houses and then have time for some swimming and tubing in the lake before lunch. In the afternoon take a short boat trip to a local fishing village followed by a visit to a bat cave where you can go swimming. After dinner go on a short night safari to observe the natural nightlife of the rainforest. Overnight in your raft house.

Day 3, Lake                      (B/L/D)

Early morning wake-up call for a canoe trip to look for local wildlife. Coffee and tea will be available on the canoe. Back to the raft houses for breakfast.  Late morning take a boat trip to another part of the National Park for a 3-hour hike to a vantage point giving a dramatic and panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding limestone mountains. Return to the raft houses for a late lunch and the rest of the afternoon is free to relax, swim, tubing, etc. Dinner and then overnight in your raft house.

Day 4, Lake                      (B/-/-)

Useful Information - KHAO  SOK  SAFARI

Going on a multi-day Jungle or Camping Safari in the rain forest requires some minor adjustments in order to have as comfortable a stay as possible.  Here is some extra information which answers the questions most frequently asked.

Facilities:

There are seven individual tree houses and one tree house with 3 individual rooms, high (one tree house is at a lower level for those with a fear of heights) in the forest canopy, complete with sturdy stairways and handrails. Basic but comfortable with private toilet and cold water shower, double bed and mosquito net (an extra single bed in triple rooms). Our backdrop is a limestone mountain with interesting caves to explore.

A hundred metres away from tree houses are the dining and relaxing area are located in a classic Thai house.

New facilities at Tree-houses

A further 5 new air-conditioned tree houses are also now available for 2009 season and good for those look for more comfort. These rooms are all joined together, not individual tree houses and would be suitable for small groups who wish to stay together – they will overlook the new pool from the balcony area. They will have an open-roof style bathroom with a hot water shower. The rooms are quite large and good for twin-bedded, double and triple options.

There will be 24 new fanned-rooms that should be ready for 2009 seaason too. Again these rooms are all joined together, 12 to the front and 12 to the rear, the two blocks separated by a walkway between with the entrance doors opening on to this walkway. These rooms will also have private balcony and hot water shower in an open roof bathroom. The rooms are large enough for twin, double and triple options.

There is a new pool area that should be ready for 2009 seaason. It is 3.5m deep and about 2,000 sq metres in size. When finally completed it should have a waterfall feature in the middle and a bar area on one of the "islands". The surrounding area to the pool will be landscaped to give more of a jungle feel, i.e. plants and trees!

On the Raja Phraba lake there are seven individual raft houses each equipped with double mattress and mosquito net and a 3 room raft houses with 2 single beds (or one double bed if preferred) and mosquito nets to each room. There are shared toilet facilities nearby. There is also a restaurant rafthouse for leisure area.

Season

The seasons in Khao Sok National Park are different to those with which you are familiar.  Instead of spring, summer, autumn and winter, people here talk about the “dry” and the “rainy” season.  The dry season is from November until April while most of the rain falls during the months May to October.  Each of the two season has its charm and its difficulties!

Mosquitoes

According to our up-to-date information there is no malaria in Khao Sok National Park.  Being bitten by mosquitoes is not pleasant, however, so to avoid of being bitten follow this advice:

·         At all of our accommodation we have mosquito nets over the beds.  Close these carefully before sleeping.

·         Wear clothes which cover as much of your skin as possible (long trousers and long sleeves shirts), especially in the evening.

·         Use mosquito repellent on the exposed parts of your body.

Guests are advised to bring

  • waterproof walking shoes

  • flashlight

  • slip-on shoes

  • protection against the sun (cream, hat, sun glasses)

  • mosquito repellent

  • swim suit

  • a small back pack

  • a sense of humour and a taste for adventure.
