ORANG-UTAN WILDLIFE & LAND OF DAYAK FOREST TRIBE

 

The trip combines the visit to orangutan research and rehabilitation centres in the Tanjung Puting National Park and to the Land of Dayak Forest Tribe.

 

We will use “klotok”, a traditional fisherman boat which have been modified to carry tourists and explore the quite Sekonyer river to visit the centre while experience the magical atmosphere of the tropical rain forest. Walk around the centres to meet the orangutans, the proboscis monkeys, gibbons and other endemic fauna and exotic flora of Borneo. You can either spend the nights on the boat surrounded only by the magical jungle sounds or in the comfortable lodge or a combination of the two.

 

Take a boat cruise along the Lamandu River to observe the way of life of the Central Kalimantan’s Dayak Tribesman and enjoy the stunning views of nature with rich of flora and fauna along the river bank.

 

Dayak Tribesmen who well known as ‘head hunters’ and the ‘cannibal’ from in the past, now they are leaving peaceful in the communal ‘Long Houses’ of the village. Some of other uniqueness are Women’s Ear Lobe and Tattooing    

 

TANJUNG PUTING NATIONAL PARK

Located in the peninsula on the south coast of the world's third largest tropical rain forest of Borneo, in Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan, the park consists of 300.040 hectares (741,100 acres). Started as a game reserve for the protection of Orangutans in 1936 and 1937, it was upgraded to a National Park in 1982. It is the only protected area in South East Asia with vast tract of wetlands, lowland, mature tropical heath and swamp forests with large rookeries that provide breeding grounds for a wide population of waterfowl. The needs of Orangutans and other primates are also available in the park, such as the 400 species of trees which can be consumed by them.

 

The soils in the park consist of yellow-red podsolic, laterite, organosol, podsol, glei humus and alluvial. The area is predominantly flat, undulating to an altitude 0-100 . Above sea level, Based on Schmidt and Ferguson Climate Classification, the park is included in the A and B types with mean annual rainfall of 2,400 mm, falling mainly in the rainy season (September-February). The relative humidity of the area ranges between 55 and 98 percent and the temperature varies from 22 - 32 degree Celsius.

 

Among tree species commonly found are Ramin (Gonistylus bancanus), Jelutung, Kayu Besi (iron wood, eusideroxylon zwagerri), Meranti (Shorea sp.) and Keruing (Dipterocarpus). all of them have high value for industry. Other plants such Bakung (asian tricum), Pandans (Pandanus tectorius), Nipah (Nypa sp.) which growing on the riverside.

 

 The park is also rich in wildlife with the commonly seen is Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) - the best known species that makes the National Park best known, Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) - a large monkey which is found only in Borneo, long tail macaque (Macaca fascicularis), birds - especially horn bills, kingfishers, myna, oriental darter and over 220 bird species.

 

Furthermore, the list of faunas living in the park are include the occasionally can be seen: Agile gibbon (Hylobates agilis), grey gibbon (Hylobates mulleri), red leaf monkey (presbistis rubicunda), Malayan sun bear (helarctus malayanus), wild lige (sus barbatus), estuarine crocodile false ghavial (Tomistoma schlegelli). The rivers together with the swamps and sesonal lake rookeries support the life of many species of fish that have very high values in term of ecology and economy.

 

THE LAND OF DAYAK FOREST TRIBE

The Dayak tribes of Central Kalimantan is settled along the Lamandau river, another river systems of Pangkalan Bun to the north. About one third of the area is TUMON Dayaks, mostly Christian, who were evangelized in the late 1920s and early 1930s. About 10% are Traditional Religion called Kaharingan.

 

The most we travel to the north the most traditional the tribes are and the transportation is more limited. To reach the area, speedboat is the only alternative. In some area you have to change the transportation to the motorized long boat. Although the area is not traditional anymore, but the Dayak tribes is still maintain their traditional cultures and stuffs from their head hunting age. The facilities in this area are very limited. You will stay in their houses or traditional long house with poor conditions of facilities. However, our guide will ensure you to enjoy and comfortable the trips.

 

 

 

ORANGUTAN WILDLIFE & LAND OF DAYAK FOREST TRIBE

Duration: 10 DAYS / 09 NIGHTS

 

 

DAY 01: JAKARTA ARRIVAL

Upon arrival at Jakarta Int’l Aiport, our guide meets you. Greets then we transferred you to your hotel in central of Jakarta, Hotel Cipta (2 star). Rest of the day is free own your leisure. There will be a pre-trip briefing this evening and this often followed by a meal together (B,L,D).

 

DAY 02: JAKARTA – SEMARANG – PANGKALAN BUN AIRPORT - KUMAI - TANJUNG HARAPAN

Early morning wake up! Transfer to airport for your flight to Semarang departure at 06.45 am. Upon arrival, then connecting flight to Pangkalan Bun. Meeting service at Pangakaln Bun Airport  by our guide and direct transfer by road to the boat at Kumai for 20 minutes.

 

The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat about 6m by 2m with a roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The guide team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. Lunch is served on the way to Tanjung Harapan, a rehabilitation center for orphaned orangutans, 2 hours away from Kumai. Here the playful and friendly baby orangutans are taught the first stages in fending themselves in the jungle. In the peaceful afternoon you have chanced to explore to quite river independently by a dugout canoe or by the klotok while observe the monkeys along the riverside. Dinner and overnight on the boat at the pier of Tanjung harapan. Thin mattress, pillow, fine meals, bottled "mineral" water, mosquito net, kitchen, simple toilet available on boat besides the familiar - helpful guides and boatmen. There is a well in Tanjung Harapan to use for bathing or clean up. (B,L,D).

 

DAY 03: TANJUNG HARAPAN – PONDOK TANGUY – CAMP LEAKEY

After breakfast board the klotok to travel up river for about 2 hours boating and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. En route stop at Pondok Tanguy, the rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans.  At Camp Leakey you will have opportunity to trek into the rain forest with your expert guide and the forestry rangers to appreciate the flora as well as perhaps sighting wild orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and birds. After trekking, cool with dip in the tea colored water, which is pure but stained with natural tannins. Lunch provided on boat. Afternoon visit the feeding station to see rehabilitated orangutans are given additional food then we will have an overnight on boat for a better opportunities seeing the animal activities in the evening and in the early morning (B,L,D).

 

DAY 04: CAMP LEAKEY - PONDOK TANGUY (B,L,D)

After breakfast under the morning dew we make a second visit at Camp Leakey for a morning trekking to see the orangutans and other wildlife starting their activities. After lunch on boat, we boating down river through the park to Pondok Tanguy while enjoying monkeys, birds and other wildlife along the shady river bank. Pondok Tanguy is the newest established rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans. We will meet the orangutans and trekking for about 30 minutes to feeding station for the orangutan afternoon feeding time. Overnight at the pier of Pondok Tanguy (B,L,D).

 

DAY 05: PONDOK TANGUY - KUMAI - PANGKALAN BUN – BAKONSU VILLAGE (B,L,D)

After breakfast free program. Before lunch we boating back to Kumai and proceed to Pangkalan Bun for lunch at a local restaurant. Proceed to Pangkalan Bun pier on Arut river. The river is another river system which gives access deeper into the interior of Central Kalimantan, the home of Dayak tribes. Tapinbini is about 4 hours up river Lamandau by speed boat and is one of the Dayak Tumon (or Dayak Lamandau) biggest village. Upon arrival at Bakonsu Village, sight seeing around the village to see their traditional plantations and also some remnants from their head hunting age, also some ancients graves such as the baby graves on a trees. Overnight at a traditional house with basic facilities (BL,D).

 

DAY 06: BAKONSU VILLAGE – KINIPAN

After breakfast, continue the trip by motorized long boat (small klotok) up the stream to Kinipan Village for about 4 - 5 hours though the rain forest, "untouristic" villages, ancient graves, some slash and burn plantations and some rapids along the hilly riverside. The forest and environment around the Kinipan Village is still virgin and we have more chances to see animals especially in the afternoon. There are still many remains of their traditional religion: the Hindu Kaharingan. You will overnight at their traditional log house with very basic facilities. In the evening they welcome you with hornbill dances, rice fermented wine served for the first touch with horn of buffalo and elephant ivory. The ceremonies and cultures of the Kinipan village is very different with other Dayak villages in Central Kalimantan. All meals will be prepared by our own cooks (B,L,D).

 

DAY 07: KINIPAN – NOMADIC DAYAK REGION – KINIPAN

After breakfast walk about an hour through unspoilt hilly rain forest and Across creeks to the area where nomadic Dayak Tumon live in small groups practising ancient slash and burn farming techniques as well as hunting and gathering in the forest. You can live with this traditional tribe and take part in the daily activities such as rattan collecting, hunting, setting animals trap etc. and learn their forest knowledge such as which plants are edible and poisonous. Back to Kinipan for overnight (B,L,D).


DAY 08: DAYAK NOMADIC REGION – KINIPAN – BAKONSU

After breakfast sail down river back to Bakonsu Village. In Bakonsu Village we will walking the surroundings to observe the simple daily life of the Dayak people. Overnight at the villager's house with  basic facilities. Meals will be provided by your own cook (B, L, D).


DAY 09: BAKONSU VILLAGE – PANGKALAN BUN

The journey down stream is much faster then up through the rapids but takes most of the day including lunch in Kotawaringin. Late afternoon arrive Pangkalan Bun, direct transfer to a hotel (one of the best hotel in town) for dinner and accommodation (B,L,D).

 

DAY 10: PANGKALAN BUN DEPARTURE

Free and flexible morning program. At 11AM transfer to Pangkalan Bun airport for flight to your next destinations.
