Our trips are led by two experienced crew who will share with you their knowledge and enthusiasm for travel to Turkey, Syria and Labanon. Come and join us for an unforgettable trip in this fantastic part of the world! Our Middle East overland trips from Istanbul to Damascus or vice versa can be joined in either city. For those joining in Damascus the daily itinerary below can be followed in reverse.

Days 1 - 8 (or day 11 - 18) Our Ottoman overland trip from Istanbul to Damascus begins as we embark on a half day drive through olive groves and rural settlements to Gallipoli and the Straits of the Dardanelles. In World War I, on this blustery and exposed peninsula, ANZAC and British Forces struggled unsuccessfully for nine horrendous months to dislodge Turkish troops from the hills above the beaches. It is a moving experience to visit the war graves and battlegrounds where so much suffering and unnecessary loss of life took place. From here we cross the Straits of the Dardenelles, leave Europe and enter the continent of Asia. We visit Troy on our way to Ephesus and spend the next 2 nights camping on the coast. Built by the Greeks a thousand years before Christ and then rebuilt by the Romans, this immense ancient city boasts an amphitheatre that can seat 24000 and a harbour with no water - still in good condition after all these years. We then travel via either Pamukkale where you can swim in warm, mineral-rich water, or take the more visually scenic route towards Marmaris and camp in the mountains before arriving in Olu Deniz and Olympus further down the Mediterranean coast Our accommodation is tree houses and campsites and we spend the next couple of days relaxing on the beach. You can also take boat trips or hire small motor bikes.

Days 9 - 12 (7 - 10) From here we travel inland and upwards for a day to the visually powerful, windswept landforms of Cappadocia via Saklikent Gorge where there is the opportunity to go river tubing. In Cappadocia over the centuries houses, churches, fortresses and even underground cities have been carved into this eerily eroded volcanic rock. The Goreme Valley provides us with an astonishing setting in which to spend a few days investigating the region. We will take you to one of the underground cities where you can explore alone or with a guide this ancient and mysterious area!

Days 13 - 18 (1 - 6) Driving through stunning mountain scenery in the crisp clear days of summer, and ice and snow in winter, we wend our way to Syria. Syrians are among the most hospitable people you will ever meet. The country has a rich and varied history with the Egyptian, Roman, Babylonian and Persian Empires having all passed through here along with Jesus and his disciples! Our first stop in this fascinating country is the market town of Aleppo. Nearby we visit Crac de Chevaliers - an 800-year-old Crusader Castle - perched on top of a mountain. Trekking out to the oasis town of Palmyra we really get into the desert proper. Sleeping out in this vast wilderness, untainted by artificial light is an experience not to be missed. The night sky dazzles with stars, satellites and shooting stars. On the road to Damascus, we head to one of the friendliest and safest of capital cities. We spend three nights in this, the oldest inhabited city in the world. From here there is the option of taking a one day guided tour into
Lebanon and Beirut.

Middle East Adventure Tours - Essential Information

Starting and Finishing your Trip
We recommend arriving a couple of days before the start of your Middle East adventure tour, or staying a couple of days after your trip is finished in order to explore these exciting cities at a relaxed pace. We can advise you on places to stay and can also book accommodation for you.

On all our Middle East overland tours that depart from Cairo, we organise free airport transfers and reservations at the hotel from where we depart. In Istanbul we depart from a campsite and can reserve hotel accommodation if you wish. Your tour leader will reserve accommodation for you at the end of the tour, if required. Accommodation that we reserves for you is a free service to our clients. You pay the hotels direct, on arrival. We have obtained group rates, and prices are from as little as £5 per night in Cairo.

Passports and Visas
Most nationalities require visas for most Middle Eastern countries visited on our Middle East overland tours. However we can currently obtain these en-route so you are not required to obtain any visas before you travel. Please ensure that you bring US Dollars to pay for your visas. You will need at least one blank page in your passport for each country you enter, which must be valid for at least 9 months. Passports or vaccination cards with an Israeli stamp, or any indication of travel to Israel, must be replaced if you are on a  Middle East adventure tour. If you have dual nationality you can only use one passport.

Turkey - Visas are issued upon arrival in Turkey. For British they cost US$20 and for Australians US$30. NZ and South Africans are free at present.

Syria & Jordan - All nationalities need a visa. We pre-book these and collect them on the border as a group visa so you do not require a visa before you join the tour. Syria costs US$15 and Jordan US$18 both to be paid in US$ cash only at the border. This price includes entry and departure taxes and reduces our time at the borders considerably.

Egypt - The visa costs US$15 for most nationalities (excl. Sth Africa) and is obtainable on entry into Egypt. South African passport holders must obtain visas before travelling.

Lebanon - Visas are included in the price of the excursion and are obtained at the border

Personal Spending Money and Local Payment
At the beginning of all our Middle East overland tours, our crew will collect the Local Payment in Cash, Sterling or US Dollars. For personal spending we suggest an average of £80 to £120 per week. Personal spending habits vary hugely depending on individuals. We cannot specify every cost, however you need to allow for visas, drinks, occasional meals out, curios and local crafts, telephone calls and emails etc. Budget on optional side trips separately. Credit cards are virtually useless outside main cities so you need to bring at least a third of your spending money in Cash US Dollars and the rest in Dollar Travellers Cheques. Please note that most historical sites give 50% reductions with a valid International Student Card or Youth Card.

Climate
Our Middle East overland tours cover fairly large distances and so we find that the topography affects the climate as much as seasons. As a general guide, Turkey is best visited from around April to October. From November to March most of Turkey experiences cold winters. Cappadocia has cold nights year round so you will need warm clothes and sleeping bag. Syria and Jordan have hot days year round but nights are cold in the desert and more so from November to March. Egypt is hot all year round and has very high temperatures in the south at Aswan and Luxor in the summer months of June to August. Of the countries we visit, only Turkey has a high rainfall.

Travelling Style & Group sizes in the Middle East
We camp in either designated campsites, or bush-camps using two person tents. We usually cook over open fires or gas stoves in a rota system. Driving days normally start around 8am and finish around 5pm with stops for lunch and buying food, seeing local sights etc. We won’t be travelling every day, although there are times when we will travel for two days in a row. We will then be stopped for three to four days relaxing somewhere.
We have two expedition vehicles for our Middle East overland tours. Although the average group size is around eighteen, one of our vehicles can carry a maximum of 24 people and the other 28.

Vaccinations
There are no compulsory jabs needed although it is advisable to be immunised against Tetanus, Polio, Typhoid and Hepatitis A. Consult your doctor or a medical clinic for up to date malarial and medical advice.

Local Customs
Remember that all the countries we visit on our Middle East overland tours are Muslim countries. People are usually extremely friendly and helpful, but please respect their customs and beliefs. This means that both men and women should dress modestly, especially when in small villages and towns in rural areas and women particularly should wear clothes that cover their legs and arms. However, on the Mediterranean and Red Sea beaches attitudes are more western and relaxed.

Ramadan
This is the Muslim holy month during which Muslims do not eat, drink or smoke during daylight hours. Although non Muslims are not expected to fast it is courteous to respect the restrictions when in public places. During this time (which varies from year to year), many shops will be shut during daylight hours. However, in the evening market stalls and restaurants hum with noise and activity.

KEY FEATURES OF OVERLAND EXPEDITION VEHICLES

When you travel overland, you will travel in our sturdy purpose-built trucks. For our Africa and Middle East tours, conditions are more extreme, and so all the vehicles visit our Harare workshop every three months for extensive servicing. During the trip preventative maintenance is carried out by our drivers who are trained at our workshop in the UK. Vehicles are built in the UK, with practicality and comfort in mind.

All trucks are equipped with:

  • Inward-facing coach seats with head rests, providing more storage space for your souvenirs and luggage as well as more leg room to stretch out on the longer journeys as we travel overland. It means we can't pack as many people in as with 'bus' type forward-facing layouts with narrow aisles, but the extra space is always appreciated!

  • The Beach - a unique feature which enables several people at a time to be up and out in the open with panoramic views on our Africa and Middle East tours.

  • Under-seat storage for your backpack so you have easy access even when driving.

  • Side and rear roll-up windows, providing extensive views.

  • Large water, fuel and food carrying capacities.

  • Onboard truck safe and library, overhead lockers, cassette stereo and a professionally-compiled medical kit.

  • Comprehensive range of spare truck parts and tools.

  • Spacious two-person tents with in-built ground sheets and mosquito netting, gas cookers, cooking gear and cutlery, cooler boxes, tables,
campstools and all-weather awnings (for cooking and shade).

  • All overland expedition trucks for our Africa and Middle East tours are equipped with sand mats and, where necessary, tyre chains and tirfor winches.

Our crew has gained a considerable knowledge and experience of travelling even before they join us. They have a passion and enthusiasm for their work and for the countries and places we visit.
All overland expedition vehicles have two crew - except in exceptional circumstances. Their experience and knowledge will enable you to get the most out of your trip and to have an unforgettable experience as you travel overland.
The diagram below provides a general idea of the layout of an expedition vehicle.
