LARES VALLEY TREK VIA HUARAN TO MACHUPICCHU

Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights

Departures: Daily with a minimum of 2 passengers

Difficulty: Moderate

This trek is ideal for travellers wishing to get off the beaten track but still take in the breathtaking ruins of Machupicchu. It is a wonderful trek taking you through rural communities in the breathtaking Sacred Valley of the Incas. We enjoy a wide variety of flora, fauna, wildlife and spectacular scenery! On our last day we are rewarded with the magnificent Machupicchu. This is a true Andean odyssey!

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco (3,350m) – Huaran (2,840m) – Cancha Cancha (3,800m)

Early morning rise. Our guide will pick you up from your hotel and we drive to the start of the trail (approx. 1½ hours) located in the Sacred Valley Village of Huaran. Here we meet up with our horseman and pack the horses. Leaving the Sacred Valley behind us we head northwards following a gently climbing trail that runs parallel to the small Cancha Cancha River. We will walk for approximately 4 hours today and camp in the small village also named Cancha Cancha. (Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2: Cancha Cancha – Quishuarani (3,700m)

This morning we depart from Cancha Cancha continuing north east up the valley, passing small thatched stone houses. After ½ hour the path flattens out before climbing steeply for the 2½ hour trek to the first pass called Pachacutec Pass (4,458m). From the pass you will be rewarded with superb views of Pachacutec Lake and the snowy peaks of Pitusiray. The path continues for an hour along a narrow ridge until dropping down into a beautiful secluded quarry filled with glacial lakes and rich in birdlife. The lip of the quarry descends into the next valley,

following a series of cascading waterfalls to the village of Quisuarani which is about 1 hours’ easy walking. We camp here for the night. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day3: Quishuarani – Lares (3,100m) – Ollantaytambo (2,700m) – Aguas Calientes

Heading west up a small valley you’ll arrive at a lake at the head of the valley and start a steep zig-zag climb up a narrow trail to the top of the second pass known as Abra Huillquijasa (4,200m) which is about 3 hours from Quisuarani. Below you lies a series of beautiful turquoise lakes. From here we descend and have lunch beside the lakes before continuing on for the short trek to the next village of Cuncani (3,750m) in the bottom of the valley (1½ hour from the pass). Our trail then follows the river valley down hill for about 3 hours to the town of Lares. Before arriving in the town we have the opportunity to enjoy a soak in some open air thermal springs (bring a swimsuit). At about 1pm the bus will pick us up and we depart for Ollantaytambo. You will have some time to explore before boarding the train to Aguas Calientes. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 4: Machu Picchu! - Cusco

A very early start after breakfast in order that we can arrive in time for sunrise at Machupicchu. We take the first bus up at 5.30am. There will be a 2 hour fully guided tour around the ruins, visiting the main sites and monuments. After the tour you will have free time to wander around and explore by yourself. In the afternoon we take the train back to Cusco, where you will be transferred back to your hotel. (Breakfast)
